Developmental Disability? NY Can Pay Part of Your Rent Plus Move-In Money
OPWDD Housing Subsidy + transition stipend
Who
Adults eligible for OPWDD services who meet the Housing Subsidy requirements.
What to do
Start here: Ask your OPWDD care manager or provider about the Housing Subsidy and Transition Stipend application.
Eligibility: You must be at least 18, have OPWDD eligibility, live independently with appropriate supports, apply for other housing aid first, and have qualifying housing and tenancy rights.
What you get
OPWDD can help cover part of rent for eligible adults who can live independently in community housing.
Benefit: A monthly housing subsidy calculated from income, county and approved housing costs; a separate transition stipend application is available.
Possible value: The subsidy only covers part of housing costs and cannot exceed the approved standard or actual cost.
Good to know
Important: It is not Section 8, does not pay all rent, and cannot be combined with another housing subsidy.
Availability: Current OPWDD program; eligibility and the subsidy budget are individualized.
Why people miss it: It was formerly called Individual Supports and Services (ISS), and is administered through OPWDD rather than a general housing waitlist.
