Donated an Organ? Claim a New York Tax Credit for Certain Costs
New York Organ Donation Credit (IT-269)
Who
Full-year New York residents who donate an organ while living for a human transplant.
What to do
Start here: Keep expense records and file Form IT-269 with the NY personal income-tax return for the year of the transplant.
Eligibility: You must be a full-year NY resident, have qualifying unreimbursed costs, and not have received benefits for the donation through the state Living Donor Support Program.
What you get
A New York personal-income-tax credit can offset certain unreimbursed costs and lost wages from a living organ donation.
Benefit: A credit for qualifying unreimbursed travel, lodging, and lost-wage expenses.
Possible value: Up to $10,000 of qualifying expenses and lost wages may be claimed once in a lifetime.
Good to know
Important: It is a one-time credit and only applies to qualifying costs not reimbursed through the specified support program.
Availability: Current tax credit.
Why people miss it: It is claimed on a state return rather than through a hospital or donor program.
