Moving Out of Shelter? Public Assistance Can Help Pay for Beds, Furniture and Appliances
New York's Public Assistance rules require local districts to provide necessary essential furniture, furnishings, equipment and supplies for establishing a home in specified situations when the need cannot otherwise be met.
Who
Public Assistance households in specified circumstances, including some families moving from temporary housing into permanent unfurnished housing, people leaving institutions and certain other health/safety-related rehousing situations.
What to do
Start here: Ask the local social services worker for an establishment-of-home/furnishings allowance before buying the items and document why the household needs them.
Eligibility: The need must fit one of the situations in 18 NYCRR §352.7(a), the items must be necessary and essential and the need cannot otherwise be met.
What you get
An allowance for essential household furnishings and equipment needed to establish a home.
Benefit: Help buying essential household items such as beds, basic room furniture, a range or refrigerator, subject to the state schedule and district determination.
Possible value: Varies by approved items and the state allowance schedule; this is not an unlimited furnishing grant.
Good to know
Important: Approval is limited to essential items and state allowance amounts. Moving into unfurnished housing alone does not make every household automatically eligible.
