Saving for Retirement? Get the 2026 Saver’s Credit — Then a New Match Starts in 2027

Lower- and moderate-income workers may qualify for the federal Saver's Credit on eligible 2026 retirement contributions. For contributions made in 2027, a new Saver's Match replaces the retirement-contribution credit and can deposit up to $1,000 per eligible person into a retirement account.

Who

Eligible low- and moderate-income taxpayers who contribute to a qualifying retirement account and meet age, dependency, student and income rules.

Where: Federal; available to qualifying U.S. taxpayers.

What to do

Start here: For 2026, keep records of qualifying retirement contributions and check Saver's Credit eligibility when filing. For 2027, use the IRS Saver's Match guidance and make sure the destination retirement account will accept the government match.

Eligibility: For 2026, MAGI must be no more than $40,250 single/MFS, $60,375 head of household, or $80,500 married filing jointly, plus the other Saver's Credit rules. The 2027 Saver's Match uses new income bands and separate claiming rules.

What you get

For 2026, the Saver's Credit reduces federal income tax for eligible retirement contributions. Beginning with 2027 contributions claimed on 2027 returns filed in 2028, the Saver's Match can add federal money directly to an eligible retirement plan or IRA.

Benefit: 2026: a tax credit of up to $1,000 per eligible person ($2,000 on a joint return). 2027 contributions: a match of up to 50% of the first $2,000 saved, up to $1,000 per eligible person.

Possible value: Up to $1,000 per eligible person, but the actual 2026 credit or 2027 match depends on contribution amount, filing status and income.

Good to know

Important: The Saver's Match is not available for 2026 contributions. It begins with 2027 contributions and is generally claimed on the 2027 return filed in 2028; the money is generally deposited into a retirement account rather than paid as immediate cash.

Availability: Saver’s Credit active for 2026 retirement contributions; Saver’s Match begins with 2027 contributions and claims filed in 2028.

Why people miss it: The current credit and the future match use similar names, and publicity about the 2027 change can make people mistakenly think the new match is already available.
