Veteran Studying in New York? The Veterans Tuition Award Can Cover Tuition Up to the SUNY State Rate
New York’s Veterans Tuition Award helps eligible veterans pay tuition for undergraduate, graduate and approved vocational study. The program was expanded so some veterans qualify based on four years of active duty even without combat service.

Start here: Review the current VTA eligibility rules on HESC and submit the required Veterans Tuition Award application/eligibility documentation and student-aid applications.
Eligibility: Meet HESC veteran-service requirements, attend an eligible New York program, satisfy residency or DREAM Act eligibility rules, and remain in required academic/financial standing. There is no income limit.
What you get
VTA pays eligible tuition costs at approved New York institutions up to the annual undergraduate tuition charged at a state-operated SUNY, subject to coordination with other aid.
Benefit: Up to actual tuition or the annual resident undergraduate tuition at a state-operated SUNY, whichever is less.
Possible value: Potentially thousands of dollars per academic year, depending on tuition, enrollment and other education benefits.
Good to know
Important: Other tuition benefits can reduce what VTA pays. A veteran receiving full tuition through certain Chapter 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill/Yellow Ribbon benefits may not receive duplicate tuition payment, and total aid cannot exceed allowable education costs.
Availability: Active; applications accepted year-round according to HESC.
Why people miss it: Many veterans know federal GI Bill benefits but do not check for a separate New York tuition award.
