Widowed? You May Be Able to Take Survivor Benefits First and Let Your Own Social Security Grow
Social Security’s deemed-filing rule does not force survivor and retirement benefits to start together. Some surviving spouses can claim one benefit first and switch later if that produces more lifetime income.
Who
Widows, widowers and certain surviving divorced spouses who qualify for both a survivor benefit and their own Social Security retirement benefit.
What to do
Start here: Before filing, ask Social Security for estimates of both your survivor benefit and your own retirement benefit at different ages, then compare the available sequences.
Eligibility: You must independently qualify for survivor benefits and your own retirement benefit. Age, remarriage, disability, work earnings and other SSA rules affect when and how much can be paid.
What you get
A surviving spouse may be able to claim survivor benefits while delaying their own retirement benefit, or in some cases claim their own retirement first and switch to a higher survivor benefit later.
Benefit: Potentially higher lifetime Social Security by choosing the better claiming sequence; survivor benefits can range from a reduced percentage when claimed early up to 100% of the deceased worker’s amount at survivor full retirement age, subject to SSA rules.
Possible value: Highly individual. The difference can be worth thousands over retirement, but the best sequence depends on both benefit amounts, ages, health, work and household needs.
Good to know
Important: “Survivor first, own later” is not always best. Unlike ordinary spousal benefits, survivor benefits have special filing rules; claiming one benefit early can permanently reduce that benefit. Do not use a one-size-fits-all strategy.
Availability: Current Social Security claiming rules.
Why people miss it: Many people have heard that filing for one Social Security benefit automatically files them for every benefit they can receive, but survivor benefits are an important exception.
