Wipe Out Up to $3,400 of NYC Unincorporated Business Tax!
New York City's Unincorporated Business Tax includes a small-business credit that can eliminate the tax when UBT liability is $3,400 or less and partially reduce it at the next tier.
Who
Unincorporated businesses subject to NYC UBT, including qualifying sole proprietors, freelancers and partnerships.
Where: New York City
What to do
Start here: Complete the NYC UBT return and calculate the small-business credit rather than assuming a small UBT balance must be paid in full.
Eligibility: The business must actually be subject to UBT and calculate liability within the statutory credit range. UBT is generally imposed at 4%, subject to exemptions and deductions.
What you get
A credit directly reduces NYC Unincorporated Business Tax liability.
Benefit: Full UBT credit when liability before the credit is $3,400 or less; a partial credit applies when liability is above $3,400 but not more than $5,400.
Possible value: Up to the entire UBT liability at or below the full-credit threshold.
Good to know
Important: The $3,400 figure is UBT liability, not business income or profit. A separate NYC resident personal-income-tax credit for UBT paid is a different provision.
Availability: Active
Why people miss it: Freelancers often hear only that NYC has a 4% UBT and miss the credit that can eliminate smaller calculated liabilities.
